Your Rights & Responsibilities (cont.)
When students in healthcare education are involved in your care, your participation is voluntary.

You may wear appropriate personal clothing and religious symbols as long as they do not interfere with your treatment.

You should be interviewed in private surroundings. You may have a person of your own sex present during certain parts of a physical exam, treatment or procedure which is performed by a person of the other sex. You are to remain disrobed no longer than is necessary to accomplish the medical purpose at hand.

As a health care institution, Ohio Valley Medical Center strives to provide a smoke-free environment. This also adds to the safety of you, our patient, your visitors and our employees. Therefore, the hospital and its medical staff prohibits smoking in any hospital building, including entry-ways.

FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH AND SAFETY, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SMOKING WITHIN OUR FACILITY. *Note: exception will be given to Hillcrest patients who, under a physicians recommendation, are permitted to smoke in a designated area on that unit ONLY.

Visitors are permitted to smoke only in the shelter outside the OVerlook Cafeteria. This policy is strictly enforced. OVMC does offer smoking cessation programs. For details, you may phone Cardiopulmonary Services by dialing ext. 8281.

Surgery Patients
Your doctor will discuss your surgery with you and will ask you to read and sign a surgical authorization and consent form stating that you understand what is to be done and agree to have it done. For most surgery, you will be asked to remove glasses, dentures, wigs, hearing aids, prostheses, leg braces, jewelry and underclothes. An anesthesiologist will see you before your surgery to briefly discuss your particular anesthesia needs during surgery. Please ask your doctor, your anesthesiologist or your nurse if you

your case will be conducted discreetly and only with those involved directly with your case.
